What is macular degeneration?
The macula is the central part of the retina at the back of the eye. The retina processes all vision. It allows you to read, recognise faces, and drive.
Macular degeneration causes progressive macular damage.
There are two main types of macular degeneration. Dry (non-neovascular) and wet (neovascular).
Dry macular degeneration is the more common type and results in a gradual loss of central vision.
Wet macular degeneration is characterised by a sudden loss of vision caused by abnormal blood vessels growing under the retina. Immediate medical treatment of wet MD is essential.
Early detection can save sight.
Common Symptoms
Straight lines appear wavy or bent
Difficulty reading

Dark patches or empty spaces in vision
Poor night vision
Decreased colour sensitivity

Healthy lifestyle: exercise regularly
Keep having your injections for wet macular degeneration
Stop smoking
Wear sunglasses
Have an eye check with an optometrist every two years
Take the Amsler grid test weekly
